Inca Savoury Empanada from El Dorado Pie & Treats

After a vibrant hour immersed in the sights, sounds, and energy of the Surrey Fiesta Extravaganza, we hopped on the Expo Line SkyTrain back to Metrotown. But the day's adventures weren't over yet! My mom announced, "Let's head to North Vancouver! I've always wanted to ride the Sea Bus." And so, we did! We disembarked at the Waterfront station. Stepping onto the Sea Bus, the iconic vessel offered stunning panoramic views of the harbor.

North Vancouver greeted us with a unique charm. We strolled through the historic Shipyards, remnants of a bygone era whispering tales of the sea. Finally, our appetites calling, we ventured into the lively Lonsdale Quay Market.

Aromatic wafts led us to El Dorado Pie & Treats. The bakery's name promised a treasure trove of deliciousness, and it did not disappoint. We decided to share the Inca savory empanada, and it was pure revelation. Each bite was an explosion of flavor: tender sliced beef, slow-cooked in a vibrant Peruvian cilantro sauce, mingled with the sweetness of carrots and peas. The garlic and spices added a delightful warmth.

Refueled and content, we set sail back to Downtown Vancouver. My parents, weary but happy, opted for the familiar comfort of the Expo Line, while my husband and I embraced the scenic route on a bus ride home.

Filipino Food Adventure at the Surrey Fiesta Extravaganza 2024

We woke up with grand plans for Bowen Island, but after a rude awakening (thanks, snooze button!), we found ourselves scrambling for a new adventure. A quick call to my mom revealed the perfect solution: the Fiesta Extravaganza in Surrey, an event organized by my dad's friend! Last year's experience was a hit, so we headed out.

A late breakfast at Tim Hortons fueled our journey by bus and train to the Surrey Civic Centre. Reuniting with a famished mom, my mission was clear: try all the pork barbecue, just like I did at the Pinoy Festival in Burnaby last week.

The vendor selection was impressive, a major upgrade from last year's event. Manny's Grill, my undisputed champion from last week, was there.

Grandt Kitchen Filipino Cuisine

Our first stop was Grandt Kitchen, where we tried their pancit (a delicious noodle dish, though grandma still holds the crown) and lumpia (spring rolls). The barbecue was flavorful—not overly sweet but a bit on the lean side. The lumpia was decent, but Little Ongpin in Richmond remains my Canadian lumpia favourite.

A craving for halo-halo, the perfect summer cooler, led us to fulfill my mom's request.

Ragged Rei

Continuing our food adventure, I snagged a pork barbecue skewer from Ragged Rei's booth. Their lack of signage left me wondering if it was a restaurant or caterer, but their delicious offering made up for it. Their barbecue was a delightful contrast to Manny's - fattier, more tender, and boasting a savoury soy sauce base flavour profile.

Mabuhay Foods and Grocery

As we savoured our finds, a glorious sight caught my eye: turon, a classic Filipino dessert, at the Mabuhay Foods stall! Recognizing them from their Kingsway grocery store in Vancouver, I dove in and ordered a spread of turon, siomai, pork barbecue, and lumpiang togue (spring rolls with mung bean sprouts).

Pork Barbecue from Mabuhay Foods

The turon and lumpia transported me back home (so much so that I completely missed taking a photo of my food!). Their flavours were a delightful reminder of after-school snacks prepared by my mom — a wave of nostalgia washing over me with every bite. The siomai, while good, couldn't dethrone Macau Imperial Tea's version. The barbecue, though undeniably sweet and flavorful, suffered from a case of the chills. Fresh off the grill, it would have been heavenly.

Pork Siomai from Mabuhay Foods

Overall, despite the missed Bowen Island trip, the Fiesta Extravaganza turned into a delicious adventure filled with familiar flavours and new discoveries. It was a perfect example of how the best-laid plans can sometimes lead to delightful surprises.

Tiramisu Cold Brew with Espresso Infused Foam from Tim Hortons

Struggling with the bitterness of cold brew? You're not alone! I find cold brew too harsh. If you, like me, have sworn off cold brew in the past, then this post is for you!

This morning, I ventured into Tim Hortons with a hopeful heart (and a rumbling stomach). Having previously disliked cold brew for its bitterness, I was hesitant. But then I saw it: The Tiramisu Cold Brew with Espresso Infused Foam. Could this be the answer to my cold brew woes?

Sweet Success! A Cold Brew Revelation

The first sip was a delightful surprise! The bitterness I usually associate with cold brew was completely masked by the sweet and creamy tiramisu flavors. It was like drinking an iced tiramisu latte! My tastebuds were singing, and even my skeptical husband had to admit it was delicious.

A Second Cup Surprise: Unveiling the Coffee

Now, here's the interesting part. We enjoyed our first cup so much, we decided to grab another. This second cup offered a delightful surprise. The initial sweetness gave way to a subtle coffee flavor – the familiar taste of cold brew, but softened by the lingering tiramisu notes. It was a delightful dance on the palate!

Daily-Worthy Delight: A Cold Brew Convert is Born!

Gone are the days of avoiding cold brew! The Tiramisu Cold Brew with Espresso Infused Foam has transformed me from a cold brew skeptic to a full-fledged fan. The perfect balance of sweetness and coffee makes it a drink I could easily enjoy every day.

Looking for a delicious and approachable cold brew experience? Head to your local Tim Hortons and give the Tiramisu Cold Brew with Espresso Infused Foam a try! You might just be surprised at how much you love it.
