After Mass today, I spent some quality time with my parents. Our first stop
was Granville Island Public Market for lunch. Naturally, I went straight to my
favourite spot, Gourmet Wok, and ordered my usual: the 3-item combo
This combo includes fried rice, which is flavourful but sometimes on the drier
side, making it a great base to soak up the sauces from the other dishes. The
fried salt-and-pepper fish had a lightly crispy exterior, though it was
slightly stale today. Despite that, the bold seasoning of salt, garlic, and
pepper still shone through. The kung pao chicken was rich and saucy, with a
slight tang and a savoury, umami-filled glaze that clung to the tender chicken
pieces, complemented by the crunch of peanuts and bright red chili peppers.
The Chinese-style barbecue pork was indulgently fatty with a sticky-sweet
glaze that melted in my mouth, offering a deliciously smoky and caramelized
flavour.
