Inca Savoury Empanada from El Dorado Pie & Treats

After a vibrant hour immersed in the sights, sounds, and energy of the Surrey Fiesta Extravaganza, we hopped on the Expo Line SkyTrain back to Metrotown. But the day's adventures weren't over yet! My mom announced, "Let's head to North Vancouver! I've always wanted to ride the Sea Bus." And so, we did! We disembarked at the Waterfront station. Stepping onto the Sea Bus, the iconic vessel offered stunning panoramic views of the harbor.

North Vancouver greeted us with a unique charm. We strolled through the historic Shipyards, remnants of a bygone era whispering tales of the sea. Finally, our appetites calling, we ventured into the lively Lonsdale Quay Market.

Aromatic wafts led us to El Dorado Pie & Treats. The bakery's name promised a treasure trove of deliciousness, and it did not disappoint. We decided to share the Inca savory empanada, and it was pure revelation. Each bite was an explosion of flavor: tender sliced beef, slow-cooked in a vibrant Peruvian cilantro sauce, mingled with the sweetness of carrots and peas. The garlic and spices added a delightful warmth.

Refueled and content, we set sail back to Downtown Vancouver. My parents, weary but happy, opted for the familiar comfort of the Expo Line, while my husband and I embraced the scenic route on a bus ride home.

Jamon y Queso Empanada from El Dorado Pie & Treats inside Lonsdale Quay Market

Our taste-bud adventure at The Shipyards Night Market continued after the initial taco feast. We wandered back through the rows of food trucks, but we were not particularly craving anything.

Deciding to explore further, we ventured towards the Lonsdale Quay Market. While some stalls were winding down for the early evening (they close at 7:00 pm!), the variety of food options was impressive. We finally settled on El Dorado Pie & Treats.

Hubby opted for the Jamon y Queso (Ham & Cheese) empanada, and it proved to be an excellent choice. The queso, different from the familiar cheddar cheese, offered a unique twist. Its distinct flavour perfectly complemented the savoury ham.

Feeling nostalgic for the pies I enjoyed in London, I couldn't resist the Beef Stew Pie. It was certainly satisfying, with a comforting filling of savoury stew. However, as expected, the flavour profile differed from its British counterpart. It offered a distinct character, yet it was equally delicious. The highlight for both the empanada and the pie was the pastry – flaky, golden, and utterly perfect.

This unplanned exploration of North Vancouver's culinary scene was a delightful surprise, and I can't wait to come back and try other food vendors at the Lonsdale Quay Market.

A Seabus Adventure and a Night Market Feast: Exploring The Shipyards in North Vancouver

After nearly nine years in Vancouver, I finally crossed a must-do off my list: riding the Seabus to North Vancouver! The sunny, warm afternoon and the promise of the newly opened Shipyards Night Market made the short journey across the water even more exciting.

Stepping off the Seabus, we were greeted by the vibrant buzz of the opening night market. The historic setting of The Shipyards, with its towering cranes and industrial charm, added a unique flavour to the atmosphere. We strolled around, soaking in the sights, learning about the area's history, and keeping a keen eye out for the diverse food trucks lining the waterfront.

Before diving into the savoury delights, a sweet temptation caught our eye. A pop-up local market housed a stall with baked goodies. We couldn't resist the allure of "Cookies by John," and I snagged a mouthwatering banana bread for a perfect breakfast tomorrow with tea.

A Taco Fiesta with Asian Flair: The Taco Tigre

With our sweet fix satisfied, it was finally time for the main event! The Taco Tigre food truck, with its enticing menu of Asian-inspired tacos, is our choice. We embarked on a full flavour exploration, ordering one of each: Beef Brisket Pho Taco, Lemongrass Chicken Taco, Caramelized Pork Taco, and Korean Kimchi Beef Taco.

Four different tacos from The Taco Tigre food truck

Each taco was unique. The slow-cooked beef brisket in the Pho Taco offered a comforting familiarity, while the caramelized pork taco presented a symphony of sweet and savoury notes. Then, there's the slightly spicy and sour Korean kimchi beef taco. However, the clear winner for me was the Lemongrass Chicken Taco. The vibrant citrus flavours of the lemongrass danced perfectly with the tender chicken, creating the best bite.

Our first adventure to The Shipyards Night Market was a resounding success. The Seabus ride offered a scenic start to the afternoon, and the market itself was a treasure trove of sights, sounds, and – most importantly – treats.

Look up while walking around The Shipyards

So tell me, have you experienced the magic of The Shipyards Night Market? Which food truck is your must-try, and which Taco Tigre flavour would you recommend?
